At the center of the enchanting rolling meadows, resided a boy named Shepherd. His life was pure, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was mainly to care for his herd of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the gales among the solo tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day after day, guarding his charges imbued in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plan.
Narratives of predators hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One morning he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but saw no wolf.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This game continued for a couple of more days. However, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one here responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
